Overstrand Life - Janet's Diaries

seems only a matter of a few weeks ago that you may have mistaken the fields to be sown for grass, showing tufts of green, now it is harvest time, with cylinders of baled straw lying randomly on the remaining barley stubble. Other fields have been planted for potatoes which too are fast maturing, flowering, different colours depending on the variety. We stopped at Northrepps Aerodrome for refreshments, pity we had not walked over yesterday, they had an open day on Saturday, that accounts for the additional numbers of light aircraft and microlites we spotted from our garden.

It is not just the farmers who are seeing their labours come to fruition, on Sunday we ‘harvested’ french beans, runner beans (well only two to be exact, the first hopefully of many), courgettes, broad beans, potatoes, an aubergine and cucumbers from Peter’s vegetable plot and the greenhouse. During the week there will be more of these plus, carrots, beetroot, spinach, lettuce, fennel,

spring onions and our first tomatoes, the latter left as long as possible to develop full their full succulence and sweetness.

By this time last year we were approaching the peak of the ladybird ‘invasion’. Those little seven spot beetles got everywhere and I do not believe there was a single soul who was not relieved when numbers finally reduced to acceptable levels. In the spring those that had successfully overwintered emerged from shrubs, cracks and crevices but fortunately they seem to have all but disappeared, presumably in the depths of the garden foliage performing pest control. This year we have seen a considerable number of pollen beetles, they too have had their nuisance value, landing on arms, faces and washing drying outside but in general they have kept to yellow flowering plants, causing little or no damage in a domestic garden.
