Sunday 3rd July 2016 - Home-grown, Around the Village and Unsettled Summer

We’re getting to the time of the year when more and more of the ingredients that go into our meals, are sourced from the garden. This evening we are having slow cooked Mundesley lamb, which as well as other ingredients, incorporates from our garden; rosemary, mint, garlic and redcurrant jelly (made in 2015). This will be accompanied by chard and new potatoes from the vegetable plot, followed by the raspberries I picked this afternoon and my homemade ice-cream. I have also picked strawberries which we will have tomorrow morning with yoghurt. These are the strawberries I was growing for my hen Cate, who has decided she is no longer so keen on them and prefers raspberries instead. There’s something special about home-grown fruits and vegetables. Of course the flavour and freshness are far superior to those bought in the shops but there is also the sense of achievement when you sit down to dinner and your plate is full or your efforts. Needless to say there are frustrations too, I have recently lost all my dill to marauding slugs and snails.

Wednesday 6th July 2016 - Seal & Shorewatch, Sharks and Village Events

Peter and I went to the Seal and Shorewatch presentation in Mundesley on Monday afternoon. Marine medic, Stephanie Davis, gave us a comprehensive talk covering the two types of seal in our waters, birth weights and maternal care of the pups. Using photographs, Stephanie showed us some of the seals that have been rescued in the area, all with various injuries etc. She also provided a phone number which can be used if we find a sick or poorly seal on our beaches. Above all, Stephanie stressed the importance of not approaching seals and keeping a safe distance from them. The group is in its infancy and are looking for volunteers to wait with seals while help is on its way. The role of volunteers is quite simply to advise people to keep away and not allow their dogs to chase the seals back into the sea. Peter and I have become members and hope to be able to support the group in the future.
