Saturday 17th March - Missed Opportunity, Tomatoes & Peppers and Pessimism!

I missed a great photo opportunity on Friday, having said that I think I would have needed Peter’s camera to really catch the moment. We were driving back along the Norwich road just before sunset, the mists were rising across the fields and in the background, a church tower with the sun, a red fireball, to one side; best seen to be fully appreciated. A good website to visit for daily postings of photographs; catching the mood of the day is iWitness24  Village signs have featured on recent postings and it is interesting to see the variants between wood and metalwork within the county. There is a facility on the site to pull all these together, which saves scanning through all the photographs.

Both Tomato and Pepper seeds have germinated well and I have been pricking out the seedlings into individual pots. The Tomatoes have made good progress and are showing their secondary leaves whereas the Aubergines are altogether slower and it will be a few more days before they are fully emerged from the potting compost. Currently they are all in the conservatory but I will shortly move them out into our unheated greenhouse, bringing them in at night if a frost is forecast. This arrangement has worked well in previous years; our greenhouse is backed by a wall providing both warmth and wind protection. I put forty previously soaked Broad Bean seeds into individual pots the other day, they could have been put straight into the soil but we find this method of starting them off gives good results and once they are about 7cms high and with a decent sized root mass, Peter will plant them out into the vegetable plot.

In between the above and general day to day and week on week chores, shopping etc.; Peter has started his second homebrew of beer and has been figuring out the best way of collecting water for the garden (in addition to our water butt collection) during the forecasted months of drought ahead. Call me pessimistic but if the past two years are anything to go by we will probably have another dry spring followed by a damp and windy summer!
