Overstrand Life - Janet's Diaries

Friday 16th March 2018 - Extension, Slumps, Sport's Club Gates and The Strand Club

We are halfway through March but there have only been a few decent days that could be described as spring-like. The fishing boats have not been out to set the pots yet but that does not mean there has not been any activity in the boiling shed which also houses the shop. Currently, one of the village builders is in the process of putting on an extension to the shop end of the shed. Although it is coming along nicely; while there are no crabs coming in, I don’t suppose there is any rush to get it finished.

The best day this week was Wednesday. Most of our morning was taken up with a trip to Norwich but on our return the grass at the front had dried sufficiently for Peter to mow. Such a pleasant day, he hoped the back lawn would be dry enough to tackle on Thursday but it was not long after we had come back from shopping when it started raining. I have not seen any figures but I would not be surprised to hear that this winter has been one of the wettest on record. The cliffs are full of water and in addition to the slip, a couple of months ago, at the west end of the promenade, there have been several smaller slumps, a large mud slide on the Trimingham cliffs which was captured on video by a dog walker and subsequently posted on North Norfolk New’s website, plus we saw a further slump today on Overstrand’s east cliffs. We could do with at least two weeks, or maybe even more, of rain free weather so the land and cliffs can start to dry out but with snow forecast this weekend, dry weather doesn’t look likely to happen any time soon.
