Tuesday 3rd May - Still no Rain, Dry Soil and Cold Winds

The dry weather continues: the media have been reporting farmers concerns for their crops. Already some are irrigating to maintain their crops viability; others are worried with the top layer of soil bone dry, that the easterly winds will blow this away and newly planted seeds will fail to germinate. We have had just 10% of the amount of rain we would typically expect at this time of year; for an agricultural based county this is not good news.

Likewise, the winds have been drying the soil in our garden and Peter has been watering our seed beds, sometimes twice a day. The sun and clear blue skies over the past few days have been glorious but the cold wind has made it a little less than pleasant. The number of visitors over the Bank Holiday weekend has been greatly reduced and cars and windows, in fact just about every exterior surface, is coated with dust and sand.
