I was out again on Wednesday evening for our WI meeting but first I should mention that a group of us attended the funeral service for a member’s husband at St Martins Church earlier in the day. As I have said, in the past, the WI are not all about Jam and Jerusalem; and in Overstrand’s case, care and support features greatly in our ethos. Quite an unusual topic for a WI meeting this month; John Needham talked about Helmets and Medals. John bought along a selection of headgear, various medals and for added interest tin boxes which originally contained tobacco (from Princess Mary, aged just 17) and chocolate (from Queen Victoria) sent to the troops at Christmas. He told us that every medal tells a story and related some of these which personally, because they involved war atrocities, I could have done without. Unfortunately, throughout the ages, it seems that humans feel compelled to perform the most horrendous acts against their own species.

Saturday 27th September 2014 - Mr Kew's Pies and Warm for Late September

Following a trip to Mr Kew’s Pies kitchens in North Walsham on Wednesday morning, our freezer is nicely stocked with different types of pies. Since Kew’s Pie and Mash shop opened in Garden Street in Cromer, the cooks in the kitchen in North Walsham have been flat out, keeping pace with not only producing pies for the shop but also for their retail outlets and regular Farmer’s Markets. Pie production starts early in the morning and I mean early (Mr Kew is an early riser so cooking starts about 1 a.m.) and as soon as the days baking is complete the next task is the deliveries. This means the kitchens are only open between 8 and 11 a.m. for direct sales to the public. As for the Pie and Mash Shop, this is open daily between 10.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. and judging by the reviews on Trip Advisor diners are enjoying not only the pies but the general ambiance in the restaurant too.
